Yick Wo is Chinese and he’s owned a San Francisco laundry business for twenty-two years which has been regulated by fire and health officials. A new ordinance is written that will destroy Yick Wo’s business which requires consent from the Board of Supervisors.
When Yick Wo applies for his permit two hundred and eighty people had applied and eighty whites got the permit but not one Asian was approved. They were denied and thrown in jail for running their business without the permit. Yick Wo petitioned the Supreme Court and Justice Matthews wrote a new law that said: "No reason whatever, except the will of the supervisors, is assigned why they should not be permitted to carry on their harmless and useful occupation. The conclusion cannot be resisted that no reason for it exists except hostility to the race and nationality to which the petitioners belong. The discrimination is therefore illegal."
OPINION:
I think that it’s wrong when anyone can mistreat someone because of their race, religion or gender but at least this started the change of the other laws that stopped people from earning a living because of their race. Because of this one Asian man other races began to realize that in this country you must stand up and fight for your rights and they did that because of the greed for control over the Chinese Laundries.

Yick Wo vs. Hopkins and The Chinese American Cases: Yick Wo vs. Hopkins
Our big question of the year is how individuals and groups of people have been feared and discriminated in the course of American history. Yick Wo or Lee Yick has been discriminated because he was Chinese, and had owned a business washing clothes. Just because he was Chinese he got arrested, and also because his laundry was wood while it was supposed to be brick. Some of the white men’s Laundromats were made of wood, but Sheriff Peter Hopkins only arrested Chinese people. The only person that was white, which the Sheriff arrested was a white women and only because of sexism.

My source is from: http://www.civnet.org/resources/teach/basic/part10/64.htm Yick Wo vs. Hopkins 1886-There were many Chinese who had to go into the laundry business, it's not like they wanted to be laundry owners, they just had to try and make some money. They had to deal with bad non-Chinese customers. Most of the laundries were in wooden buildings. The Board of Supervisors gave permission to have laundries in wooden buildings, but they didn't give permits to mostly the Chinese, Yick Wo ran a laundromat for many years, and he wasn't given a permit, but he continued running the laundromat. He was arrested because he didn't have a permit. This is related to the big question because the Chinese were being discriminated, they didn't receive the permits, and Yick Wo was oppressed because he didn't get a permit and was put in jail.

The site that i used is: http://www.civnet.org/resources/teach/basic/part10/64.htm After i read this, i learend that htis happend in 1886. It was aobut a laundry owner named Yick Wo, the board of suprerviosrs said that luandry places were to be made of brick and not wood, but Yick didnt want to. So he fought for not having his laundry built in bricks, and was sent to jail. This is related to our big question, becasue this shows how chinese has been discriminated. They were picked on to hve their laudnries changed becasue they were differnt, and was sent to jail becuase they dont wnat to. IT is also oppression, because it shows that thie chiense wants to choose for themselves, and not be ordered aroudn to do things.
1886, california, san fransico - San fransico is known for the chinese owning laundary stores. The officals were told that the laundromats were to be build in brick buildings due to the danger of fire. Over 95% of 320 laundaries were built in wooden buildings in which two-thirds of the chinese owned. The board of Supervisors granted the permission to operate laundaries in wooden buildings to all people expect "color people" including the chinese. Yick Wo was a chinese laundary owner for 22 years didn't get a permit but continue running his laundary bussiness. He was arrested and was convicted under the condiance. Yick Wo was the first chinese to be discrimanted against in the supreme court.

Yick Wo is a Chinese that owned a laundry during the 1880's. During that time, there was a law saying all laundries must be made out of bricks. Sinch wood was the cheapest material, many poeple used it. Yick Wo was one of the people who used them to make his laundry. He refused to changed the woods used to make up his store. This got him arrested.
A reason why laundry stores must be made up of bricks was because of safety reasons. In the 1880's, fire was needed to wash cloths. A fire could start easily and spread fast if all were made up of wood. Bricks makes the fire hard to spread as easily as wood.

Backin the 1800's laundry mats were suppost to be made in a brick building.Yick Wo's was made by wood, which was elegal because it spreads fire. He refyused to get a document sighed saying that he would get a brick building, but he refused. He got errested. This is an act of discrimination and racism.
