PUN CHI
Fear of loss of control in the 19th century drove the ignorant few to demand laws that prevented Asians from immigrating to this country or demanding so many documents and fines hoping that the Chinese would go away and not return.
The California legislature and courts tried to take away the rights of Chinese immigrants with the Foreign Miners Tax of 1852 and a California Supreme Court decision called the People v. Hall Act. Pun Chi, a Chinese businessman wrote an appeal to Congress against anti-Chinese threats. Pun Chi wrote that the immigrants came here as invited to work for the railroad and other companies and when they came they were persecuted. He wrote that the mining tax collectors' abused and murdered Chinese miners. William Speer, a Presbyterian minister in San Francisco’s Chinatown, translated Pun Chi’s appeal from Chinese to English and published it in 1870.

OPINION:

This law helped to block laws that taxed and fined immigrants for coming here to this country to earn a living and if they hadn’t written this law our country wouldn’t be as developed as it is today because the population and ethnic groups were a large part of what made this country great. Even after 9/11 the immigrant base in New York City is still growing and now is at over 35% going up 5% since that infamous date which means that even though we looked like we were going to fall apart others knew that we would always win.

Pun Chi

Pun Chi was a man which sent a letter to Congress recommending that if the US government sent ships to China to bring Chinese to America to work the least they could do was to protect the rights of the Chinese. Pun Chi is related to our big question because he wrote about how “we Chinese are viewed like thieves and enemies” and how “villains of other nations are encouraged to rob and do violence to us!” >:( The Chinese in the 1860’s were being discriminated because they were immigrants in America, and they weren’t born in America so there shouldn’t be any rights for them. This is also an example of resistance from oppression because he’s writing about how Chiense has been treated unfairly and how other people are encouraging people from all races to put-down people of Chinese origin and race.

My source from: http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/6618/
1860-Pun Chi was a young Chinese merchant, he wrote an appeal to the Congress sometime from 1856-1868. He was asking for help against anti-chinese problems in the west. Pun Chi gave evidence of what's been going on with the Chinese, like the abuse of the taxes. He wrote about what the Chinese expected from America and what they heard about it, and he wrote about how they ended up being treated. He wrote and listed the bad ways the Chinese were treated, how they were discriminated and oppressed. His letter shows how the Chinese was related to the big question.

I learned that Pun Chi was a man who wrote a claim to the congress, saying how chinese people were thought of as theieves and ememies. He ws saying how chiense having lots of problems back in china, like government, percicution, and more. He is telling America about all the hardships that there is in China, to help them. This is related to our big question, because it shows how the chinese were treated or viewed by others. it also showed how many hardships ther ewaer for the chines people, and hwo America wont help them, because they are chinese, adnlike they said they were veiwed as theives and enemies.

Pun Chi was a young chinese immigrant that spoke upto the government about their laws. He wrote them a letter to them asking for equal rights as the white man. Not only didPun Chi do this for him self, he did it for all of the other Chinese Immigrants, and the other races that were treated with no respect. In a way he is linked to Mary Dyer for speaking up for rights and beliefs.
